History of art has emerged and growing in line with civilization of man. Having beginning of from ancient era, classical, middle ages, modern (Industrial Revolution in England) until Globalization era, arts has experienced various changes to start from creation concept until the function, in consequence of technological development.
When Industrial Revolution was emerged in England at century-18, has emerged romantic movements the most upper of art, that is Art and Craft movement and Art Nouveau. This movement tries giving balance between roles of man and technology.
Modern period has elapsed. Then in the early of century-19 happened World War 1 and World War II resulting infrastructure damage and confusion of the artist. At that moment emerges artistic criticism to modernism, as beginning of a period of postmodern.
The artist has done rebellion to art during postmodern, causing emerges two-bit art like graffiti and magpie. Artistic style appearance and design, like dadaism, futurism, fauvism, konstruktivism, art deco, pop art, etc, be criticizing to modernism.
Art “Batik” as part of artistic area also experiences development. Batik in Indonesia especially in Java was growing and reach the top. Initially batik grows in empire applied for clothes of the empire officers. Motif is made based on at cultural values and adapted for clothes usefulness. For example motif “sido dadi, sido luhur” only applied when married.
At the moment batik was growing to whole world which applicable to all people. Motif is not follows values which able to cause batik thus two-bit goods.
Based on above description, this study focus will be explained:
- Brief history of batik
- Motif making concept, from classic motifs until contemporary motifs
- Motif values and batik process
- The application of batik motif in clothes
- Batik motif as clothes with batik motif as decoration (painting of batik)
- Business is preserving batik to globalization influence
This study expected able to give brain-storming to conservation of batik to globalization influence.
