Method of Wax Patterningby Ms. Janet Stoyel Collins English Dictionary definition: Sten’cil: thin sheet pierced with pattern which is brushed over with paint or ink, leaving patterns on surface under it. This presentation seeks to explore the world of the Stencil and its importance as a method of surface patterning. The exploration will focus upon the technologically accomplished and design rich stencil culture of Japan, the Japanese Stencil—Katagami. The historical importance of, and, the rise in popularity of, the stencil to the Japanese culture will be described. Methods of katagami manufacture will be discussed and design translation of Katagami patterns will be explored. Stencilled materials using Japanese Katagami will be shown. The method of stencilling may be transferable and so applicable to Malaysian Batik. Contemporary wax-resist stencils suitable for batik will be introduced for discussion. The method of transferring patterns and designs using wax based substances and stencils will be explored. Practical samples of contemporary stencils aimed specifically at the batik artist will be presented in conjunction with material samples for evaluation. Samples of stencils for batik experimentation will be provided for convention attendee’s. Assessment to the practicality and suitability of presented sample stencils and stencilled materials will be judged by convention attendee’s via an on-line/postal feedback form. |
