Nizam bagged the first prize in the fashion category of Piala Seri Endon 2004. His experimentation with batik was a relatively recent occurrence, but he brought his formal training and inherent sense of adventure to it.
A big event for Nizam in 2005 was his inaugural solo fashion show and art exhibition, which was launched by the Queen, Her Majesty, the Raja Permaisuri Agong. He likes to experiment with oil, sugar and salt to see how the dye disperses on the fabric and has used twigs, bamboo, broomsticks and brushes in batik making.

Michael Shu's cross-cultural approach to batik fashion is the first thing that strikes you. His second-prize winning entries in the competition comprised a sari, a kurta and a Punjabi suit adorned with Chinese peony and water motifs. The fabrics were all batik - which he considered the "Malay element" in the collection.
He has been designing and producing batik for over five years. "I like to promote Malaysia's mixed cultural heritage. Batik is for all Malaysians, not any one race in particular," he says. He is a third-generation member in his family to work on textiles and currently operates from his boutique in Desa Sri Hartamas.

When she won the third prize in the fashion category in 2004, Suhairi was a final-year textile design student at UiTM. Just 24 years old, she was the youngest winner in this competition.
For her winning entries, she made her own natural dyes. She drew inspiration from the Orang Asli for her batik design, and researched fashion trends when designing the clothes.
She says she works best when she is alone: "That's when I make crazy batik!"
Since her graduation, Suhairi has been mulling over the various job offers she had received.
